Lone Pine, CA — California is full of interesting lost ski areas, including ones that never even opened. Probably the most notable was Disney’s planned project in Mineral King. Another interesting proposal is situated near the continental U.S.’s highest peak.

Horseshoe Meadows Road was originally a road for loggers. In the 1930s, it was envisioned as part of a freeway that would have gone through the Sierras. Thankfully, that did not happen.

Then came the idea of a ski resort. This road has become associated with Disney’s Mineral King project, but it wasn’t built for that intention. Rather, it was built further up the mountains for another planned ski resort development. However, this never came to fruition. The road now serves as a way for drivers to reach hiking trails.

Sidetrack Adventures shared a POV of his ride up Horseshoe Meadows Road, and the reason why it exists in the first place.

Today, the road still appears to be in decent shape. The road remains closed in the winter, but is open throughout the summer. While it doesn’t provide access to a ski resort, it still makes for a beautiful drive.
