Today is officially the last day of meteorological summer, with fall taking over on September 1st. Depending on where you live, there’s a good chance it still feels like we’re a long way away from winter. Temperatures are still high, fires are still burning, and the days are still pretty long. But winter is far closer than you think, and these four Canadian ski resorts prove that.
Lake Louise And Sunshine Village Turn White
Lake Louise Ski Resort and Banff Sunshine Village, both a part of the SkiBig3 collective, were among the resorts showing off fresh snow from the weekend storm.
While the snow is not expected to remain throughout the coming weeks, early season snowfall is always a welcome sight. Higher elevations can see snow well before ski season begins, especially as late August gives way to September.
The snow is still lingering at Banff Sunshine as of Monday morning (August 31st), though it’s mostly melted away at Lake Louise. Temperatures at Banff are expected to sit in the 40s today, so the snow probably won’t last much longer. Nonetheless, it’s an exciting sight.
Kicking Horse And Panorama Also See Snow
Further west, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and Panorama Mountain Resort also received a taste of winter during the same weather system.
Fresh snow covered portions of the mountains at both resorts, creating scenes that looked far more like October or November than the final weekend of August. In some of the images it looks like around 2 inches might have fallen in some places.
For ski and snowboard lovers, this snowfall is another reminder that the transition toward winter is already underway in some parts of North America. The snow is pretty much completely gone at both mountains as of Monday morning.
Winter Is Getting Closer
One weekend of August snowfall does not mean ski season is about to begin. Warm temperatures have already returned and much of this early snow has already disappeared.
Still, the sight of snow falling at four major Canadian ski resorts is an exciting one as September begins. In just a matter of months, these mountains will once again welcome skiers and snowboarders.
