Copper Mountain in Colorado, where a lost wallet was found by police with illicit drugs.

A man in Summit County, Colorado, is now facing a drug charge after authorities connected him to a wallet that had been turned in to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office the week prior. The wallet, which was found at Copper Mountain resort and previously reported on by us last week, contained a small baggie of white powder that field-tested positive for cocaine.

According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the man came forward claiming a Copper Mountain resort employee had stolen his wallet. Investigators quickly determined that was not the case, and that the wallet had already been recovered and booked into evidence by the Sheriff’s Office before the man ever filed his report.

A deputy met with the man in person to clarify the situation and explain the process for retrieving his belongings. At that same meeting, the deputy issued the man a summons for Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, a charge that stemmed directly from the cocaine found inside the wallet he was trying to recover.

The case is a notable update from the original report, in which the identity of the wallet’s owner was entirely unknown. At that point, all contents had been booked into evidence and no arrests had been made. The man’s decision to come forward and report a theft ultimately led authorities straight back to him.

No resort employees were implicated in the incident. The allegation of theft against Copper Mountain staff was not substantiated by the investigation.
