Jackson, New Hampshire โ Black Mountain was the first to open for the ski season in New Hampshire. They’ve also probably made the most upgrades this year out of any ski resorts in the state, perhaps even the region.
In his latest letter to the Indy community, General Manager Erik Mogensen detailed the various upgrades made at Black Mountain this past offseason. There were so many changes that he was actually able to compile a top-10 list of enhancements.
The most noteworthy additions are three new expert glades, accessible from the top of the Summit Double Chair. The three new glades are called Backout, Blackout, and Champagne Problems (they really like champagne there). Erik compared it to an East Coast version of hiking up the Highland Bowl at Aspen Highlands. Adding this terrain allows Black to increase the ski resort’s vertical drop.

Other Upgrades
Other referenced improvements include new food and beverage upgrades, expanded decks to its lodges, a 30% expansion of parking, snowmaking upgrades around the Platter Pull, fifty new snowguns to ski well into spring, 28,000 feet of new snowmaking lines, the lower lodge underwent an extensive renovation, growing the Alpine Cabin, refurbishing the Platter Pull and Summit Double Chair, and adding snowmaking to the Sugarbush trail.
I wrote an article a few months ago about the best improvements at New Hampshire ski resorts, but I didn’t know about Black’s projects. Knowing what they did now, I’d probably place it at the two spot, perhaps even at number one. For reference, Bretton Woods took the top spot because of a new high-speed quad and glade, and Pats Peak was two for its new chairlift, among other upgrades.
