Mad River Glen is reminding visitors and nearby residents to be bear aware as several young black bears have been spotted causing problems around the base of the ski area.

According to a social media post, the young bears have managed to get into trash cans and compost bins, using their incredible sense of smell to fulfill their hunger. Bears will travel for miles if they catch the scent of food or trash. When they find easy-to-access human food, they can loose their natural fear of humans and become dangerous both to people and themselves.

In order to keep bears safe and wild, make sure to keep your car clean of food and scents, and close the windows and lock doors at night. Use bear-proof containers to store food and trash, keep trash indoors until collection day if necessary, clean grills and outdoor dining surfaces, and don’t leave pet food or birdseed outside overnight.
