California’s Lassen Volcanic National Park appears to make up the partial home of a new wolf pack, the “Diamond Pack”, as revealed in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s gray wolf activity map for November.

The Yowlumni Pack discovered Tulare County earlier this summer (Not the Diamond Pack)

According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Wolf Management Update from July-September of 2024, the Diamond Pack was initially made up of a breeding pair of wolves, LAS28F and an unknown individual, traveling together. Now, according to California Wolf Watch, that pack includes two pups.

California Wolf Watch shared the news to their Facebook page, explaining that while gray wolves have been confirmed dispersing through the park, this is the first time a pack has actually been confirmed inside the park.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is also home to a population of endangered Sierra Nevada Red Foxes, one of the only known breeding populations in the world. Current evidence shows that the return of gray wolves to California will benefit the Sierra Nevada red fox population through the reduction of coyotes.
