If you are unfamiliar with the term “gustnado” rest assured you are not alone. Wikipedia defines it as “a brief, shallow surface-based vortex which forms within the downburst emanating from a thunderstorm.” Rather than a tornado formed from a swirling storm, gustandos are like rotating eddies thrown off a boat’s wake while making a turn (explanation below). Pretty wild thing to see while driving down the highway:
“This video features a weather-related phenomenon known as a gustnado, where a storm downdraft creates a significant wind event that has not started rotation or connection to the storm cloud. The video was recorded on freeway I-94 east bound, near New Haven and Richmond Michigan. The creator was driving was attempting to out pace the event at a high rate of speed.”
