16-year-old Tahitian surfer,Gilbert Teave-Tehuritaua, lives right at the end of the road from the world famous break Teahupoʻo on southwestern coast of Tahiti. On May 3rd Teahupoʻo was absolutely firing and Gilbert made his way out the lineup first thing in the morning.
After successfully riding his first wave, he was filled with confidence and got right back in the pocket to wait for his second wave of the day. Unfortunately his follow up ride didn’t work out so well. Gilbert wiped out spectacularly and got dragged across the reef suffering lacerations across his face and body. When he finally came up for air another wave was incoming so he dove to avoid the impact. After coming up a second time a jetski was there and he was loaded onto the rescue sled and taking to shore where he was met by an ambulance.
Tough kid, he’s all smiles telling the story but you can tell this was a scary experience. If you’re interested in following Gilbert to get some raw local content from Teahupoʻo follow his Instagram HERE and YouTube HERE.
