Werner Herzog made this film in 2000 to fully explore the survival of Juliane Koepcke, a German woman, who at age 16 was the lone survivor of the downed airplane LANSA Peruvian Flight 508.  In 1971 the plane was struck by lighting over a South American jungle which led to its mid-air disintegration and stranded Juliane to fend for herself.  Herzog and Juliane return to the wreckage and recreate her story of survival.
