A major winter storm is expected to bring extraordinary snowfall to the Chilean Andes over the coming weeks, prompting Ski Portillo to suspend access to the resort and close its trails for safety.
According to an update from Ski Portillo, the storm was forecast to begin on Wednesday, July 15th, with reliable weather models calling for more than four meters, or over 13 feet, of snowfall by the end of the month. The system has strengthened in recent days and could keep travel restrictions in place into early August.
The projected snowfall would rank among the largest storm cycles of the Southern Hemisphere ski season and could dramatically improve snow conditions after a slow start to winter.
Resort Access Will Be Closed
Because of the expected snowfall and avalanche hazard, access to Ski Portillo will be shut down for several days. During that period, no vehicles will be allowed to enter or leave the resort while road crews and authorities manage conditions along the mountain highway.
The ski area also announced that all slopes will remain closed during the storm because of safety concerns. Officials have already contacted guests with reservations scheduled through July 22nd to arrange modifications to their bookings.
The resort also stated that day skiers will not be permitted until conditions allow for a safe reopening. Additional updates will be shared through the resort website, email communications, and social media channels as the storm develops.

Huge Snowfall Could Transform The Season
The closure comes after an unusually challenging beginning to the 2026 season. Ski Portillo delayed its opening earlier this winter because of below average snowfall before eventually opening with limited terrain for hotel guests only.
If the forecasts are true, the incoming storm could completely change conditions across the resort. Ski Portillo typically receives about 5.1 meters of snow during an average season, meaning nearly an entire season’s worth of snowfall could arrive during a single extended weather event.
Located high in the Andes near the Chile Argentina border, Ski Portillo is known for its steep terrain, legendary powder skiing, and isolated setting. Those same characteristics also make the resort vulnerable to road closures during major storms as avalanche control work and heavy snowfall can make travel impossible until conditions stabilize.
Patience Could Be Rewarded
The temporary closure will disrupt travel plans for many visitors, but the long term outlook could be excellent for skiers planning to visit later this season. Heavy snow events in the Andes are often followed by extended periods of clear weather, creating the deep powder and stable conditions that generally make Ski Portillo one of South America’s most iconic ski destinations.
