Surfing a tidal bore.
Surfing a tidal bore.

Professional surfer Jamie O’Brien took advantage of a massive, 20 foot tidal bore that creates an unbelievable mile long wave in Alaska. The wave just went on and on, allowing them to ride for miles on end.

A tidal bore occurs when the leading edge of an incoming tide creates a standing wave that travels upstream against the river or narrow bay’s current. They only occur in a few places around the world, requiring a large tidal range that funnels into a shallow, narrow body of water. While they can be particularly dangerous for shipping, these bores present remarkable opportunities for surfing.
