Following a pair of cougar encounters at Whistler’s mountain bike park, the British Columbia resort has been working side by side with the Conservation Officer Service to access public safety and as a precautionary measure have closed the Ascent Trail and the Creekside and Garbanzo Zones until further notice.
“In one incident, a mountain biker was approached by a cougar. The cougar disengaged when other bikers arrived but stayed in the area. In the second incident, a mountain biker was chased by a cougar for approximately 350 metres before falling. He threw rocks at the cougar, which also remained in the area.” –Conservation Officer Service
Whistler is requesting the guests to remain patient and promise to updates as the situation evolves.
“The COS are continuing to monitor and assess cougar activity and will respond as necessary to ensure public safety. Reports of cougar conflicts or aggressive cougar behaviour can be made to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.”
