Beginning today, June 19th, Yellowstone National Park will be closing select rivers and streams to fishing from 2pm to sunrise the next day due to warmer water temperatures and low river flows.
Select rivers and streams have seen water temperatures exceed 68°F in recent days. Coupled with low flows, these conditions are lethal to trout and the closure will help protect the park’s native and wild trout fisheries. They will remain in effect until conditions improve.
Staff will continue to monitor the water temperatures in the coming days and colder temperatures are expected to arrive this weekend. If the water cools adequately, the closure may be lifted.
The Madison River and all associated tributaries, the Firehole River and all associated tributaries, and the Gibbon River and all associated tributaries downstream of Norris Campground are all closed daily from 2pm to sunrise the following day.
Yellowstone Lake and other lakes will stay open to fishing from sunrise to sunset in addition to all other rivers and streams not listed as closed. Anglers are asked to fish during the coolest times of day and to land fish quickly. Gentle handling of the fish in the water as much as possible, in addition to letting them recover before release, will help protect the park’s fisheries.
