16 of 21 towers for the new Explorer Gondola at Big Sky Resort have officially been installed, building the backbone for what will eventually provide massive improvements to comfort and speed in accessing the Explorer and northern Swift Current terrain.
Each of the 16 towers required precise helicopter installations at pre-determined locations across varying terrain, with expert pilots and construction teams working in perfect coordination to complete this portion of the project. The tower line follows a streamlined path designed to maximize uphill capacity and stunning views of Lone Peak while ensuring an efficient and stable ride.
Once complete, the towers will be the support for a new two-stage gondola replacing Big Sky’s oldest chairlift, the Explorer chair. The gondola will extend to the bowl, connecting skiers and riders to the bottom of the Lone Peak Tram. It will be able to transport over 3,200 skiers per hour.
The Explorer Gondola project first kicked off during the summer of 2023 with earthwork and foundation work at the mid-station. The summer of 2024 saw work on the upper station and mid-station. If all continues on schedule, the new gondola will open during the 2025/26 ski and snowboard season.
