Skiing Rambo on a powder day.
Skiing Rambo on a powder day.

There are plenty of horrifyingly steep ski runs throughout North America. Some are just flat out cliffs, while others are brutally icy and grip is near non-existent. Crested Butte‘s Rambo is known to be the steepest man-made ski run in the continent, with a consistent pitch of 55° and often very little coverage. If you go onto google and look for a picture, you’ll likely see rocks, trees, and a lot of large moguls.

But after a big powder dump, Rambo looks a little bit different. There are still trees and rocks sticking out, and it’s still very much filled with moguls, but it looks a bit more pillowy when there’s a boat load of snow. It does not make it look much easier though.

One of the lucky first dozen-or-so to go down Rambo upon the opening North Face Lift after 2-3 feet of snow accumulation during a historic storm in the Gunnison-Crested Butte region.
