Maine — Maine’s tallest peak is as rugged and remote as it gets.
Located in Baxter State Park, Mt. Katahdin is 5,269 feet above sea level, making it one of the tallest peaks in the Northeast. The name comes from the Penobscot tribe, as Kathadin translates to “great mountain” in English. Its high-alpine, rocky, bowl-terrain reminds some of Western North America’s backcountry skiing.
Last week, Blake Keogh shared a video of him and his buddies shredding powder on Katahdin. Last winter, Blake had to fight through a busy schedule and inconsistent snowfall to find the optimal time to ski the “great mountain.” My ultimate takeaway from the video was how many spectacular skiing routes there are off Katahdin.
If you try to ski Katahdin, please note that parking reservations are required at Baxter State Park. In addition, due to the high alpine environment and steep terrain, please bring the appropriate backcountry gear, including a beacon, probe, and shovel.
