An unidentified, male base jumper is dead after his parachute deployed late while jumping from the 1770′ Stawamus Chief Mountain north of Vancouver on Sunday morning reports CBC.

The area is an extremely popular BASE location in the summer and Ski-BASE location in the winter. According to witness reports, the BASE jumper’s parachute deployed too close to the ground and he ended up falling near the Sea-to-Sky Highway. The victim’s name remains private while the victims’ family members are notified.

Squamish Mayor, Patricia Heintzman told CBC, “Your thoughts immediately go to, ‘Was it a person in the community? Did you know them?’ We’re a pretty small, tight-knit community here.” To which she added, “You think about this person and their family, and it’s very sad.”

*Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s friends and family.
