A toast to Robert Redford at Sundance Mountain Resort.

Sundance Mountain Resort marked what would have been Robert Redford’s 90th birthday on Tuesday, August 18th, with a celebration centered on the Utah mountain he helped create and loved for decades.

The resort shared a message on social media following the gathering, writing that it marked Redford’s birthday “the only way that made sense, on the mountain, with the people who love it.” The post thanked those who came to Sundance to honor the actor, filmmaker, conservationist and longtime founder of the resort.

A Birthday Celebration on the Mountain

Sundance Mountain Resort hosted a special Robert Redford Day on August 18th, inviting guests to ride the Outlaw Express during extended evening hours. Lift rides were available from 6 to 8pm with a $10 donation, with proceeds benefiting the Sundance Nature Alliance. A brief program was also scheduled for 7:30pm. The event gave visitors an opportunity to remember Redford in a setting closely connected to his life and legacy.

Robert Redford’s Sundance Legacy

Redford helped grow Sundance Mountain Resort in the 1960s after becoming captivated by the area. The resort developed into a year-round destination built around a balance of art, nature and recreation.

That philosophy became central to Redford’s broader legacy, with Sundance eventually became closely associated with independent filmmaking through the Sundance Institute, which Redford established in 1981 to support emerging filmmakers and storytellers.

The resort has continued to emphasize the preservation of its surrounding wilderness while offering skiing and other mountain activities. Its identity remains deeply connected to Redford’s original vision of creating a place where people could experience nature while pursuing creativity.

A Lasting Connection to Sundance

Redford died at age 89 in September of 2025, but his presence remains deeply tied to Sundance. The resort’s celebration of his 90th birthday offered another reminder that his legacy extends well beyond Hollywood.
