An SUV crashed through a fence and plunged into a swimming pool at Smugglers’ Notch Resort in Vermont on Monday afternoon, sending first responders to the scene and prompting a police investigation.

According to NBC5, the crash occurred around 3:30pm when the vehicle broke through a perimeter fence and landed in the resort’s pool while people were swimming. Several swimmers, including a young boy and a girl, were struck as the SUV went under. Bystanders pulled both from the water and the girl was later taken away by ambulance while the boy sustained minor injuries.

A Vermont State Police trooper was seen placing a person in handcuffs and putting them in the back of a cruiser shortly after the crash. Multiple witnesses told NBC5 that the person taken into custody was the driver of the SUV. Because of the ages involved, VSP has not released the driver’s identity or further details about the incident.

Hours later, a crane lifted the submerged SUV out of the pool and it was towed from the property.

Resort officials said an incident like this has never happened before at Smugglers’ Notch. Steve Clokey, the resort’s chief marketing officer, said the property sees heavy mixed traffic from bikes, golf carts and pedestrians and reminded guests to stay alert while driving.
