GLACIER NATIONAL PARK, Mont. — A man suffered severe injuries Saturday afternoon after a falling rock crashed through the roof of his jeep while driving on the Going-to-the-Sun Road inside Glacier National Park.
According to Glacier National Park officials, the incident occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. near the Rimrocks, a steep cliff area located just below Logan Pass. Glacier National Park rangers and the park’s Advanced Life Support (ALERT) helicopter crew responded to the scene. Video was captured of the ALERT helicopter landing directly on the scenic highway to airlift the victim.
The victim was transported to Logan Health hospital in Kalispell for treatment. The victim’s identity and current condition have not been released by park officials. The incident forced a nearly two-hour closure of Going-to-the-Sun Road while emergency crews secured the scene. The highway was reopened to traffic just before 4:00 p.m.
While rockfalls are a known hazard along the steep cliffs bordering the popular roadway, officials noted that extensive stabilization efforts (including the installation of massive rock bolts) were completed during a major road reconstruction project several years ago to mitigate the risk.
