St. Moritz in Switzerland doesn’t necessarily have a reputation as a freeride hotspot, but PeakRankings claims the resort holds more off-piste potential than most riders realize. They point out that because so few visitors look beyond the groomed runs, untouched snow can sit for days or even weeks after a storm.
Their top pick is Corvatsch, particularly the zones accessed from the upper mountain tram and the backside of Furtschellas. The crew notes these north facing slopes hold snow well and offer dramatic lines, but they caution that several routes cliff out unexpectedly, meaning riders who don’t know the layout could end up hiking back to safety.
When fresh snow is scarce, PeakRankings says Diavolezza and Lagalb are the better call. They describe Diavolezza as home to legitimate big mountain lines for those who know where to find them, while Lagalb is framed as a slightly tamer but still enjoyable option.
As for Corviglia, the team says it doesn’t get much attention for off-piste, but a traverse from the top of the Piz Nair tram opens up a serious amount of out-of-bounds terrain. They describe the lines as steep and obstacle heavy, with a payoff that includes some of the most scenic views in the region.
None of these zones are patrolled or avalanche controlled and hazards go unmarked. Skiers/snowboarders should always carry a beacon, shovel, and probe, plus consider hiring a guide if they’re unfamiliar with the terrain.
