Behind the scenes of an Alpine World Cup Race.

Ski racing is a pretty incredible sport to watch, pushing the human body near its fastest possible speeds without assistance from motors or gears (on land, of course). Behind the races themselves, there’s a ton of work going on to ensure the courses are well built, the skis and gear are taken care of, and the skiers and ready for action. Level 4 Ski instructor Darren Turner was given a bit of a behind-the-scenes look at the men’s World Cup Giant-Slalom race at Val d’Isere.

In between runs, skis might be given a retune, swapped out, or given general maintenance in the ski room. Skis might need some work because something happened in the run, or they might need some work because of the snow conditions. A ski might be too sharp for certain conditions or too dull for others. There’s so much that goes into fine tuning the gear behind the scenes for every single race.
