A climber was rescued on Thursday, December 11th, after spending a significant portion of an evening lost in Eldorado Canyon State Park in Colorado. Boulder County Comminications Center first received a report of the overdue climber at approximately 1:49am Thursday morning.
According to Boulder County, the 24-year-old climber depleted all available headlamp batteries and drained his cell phone battery while climbing the multi-pitch Naked Edge route (5.11b). After taking longer than expected to complete the route and remaining overdue for several hours, his family contacted 911 asking for help.
A drone supplied by the Boulder Police Department was used to locate the climber and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group personnel worked to assist the individual down the technical descent. In total, the operation lasted about 6 hours.
Boulder County wishes to use this incident to remind hikers, climbers, and other adventurers to ensure they remind someone of their outdoor plans, establish check-in procedures, and bring all appropriate equipment. Doing so can keep you and others safe while preventing emergencies.
