Winthrop, Washington — Thanks to a wet October, the Nordic ski season has arrived early in Washington.

Last week, Methow Trails opened for the 2025-26 season. Last week, the largest cross-country skiing network in North America opened a small amount of its terrain for the first time. The snow was deep enough to be groomed in Washington Pass. While last week’s trail report cited the conditions as icy, cross-country skiers praised the snow quality on social media.

Come Ski the Methow

On Sunday morning, Washington Pass woke to a foot of new snow, creating sublime gliding conditions. The next groom is expected on Tuesday morning.

About Methow Trails

Situated in the North Cascades and Methow Valley of Washington, Methow Trails is the largest cross-country ski trail system on the continent. The trail network is made possible thanks to partnerships with more than 175 landowners. Some of the trails are situated on U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and state land. The trail network features over 200 kilometers (120 miles) of skiing. Skiing is free for kids 17 and under and seniors 75 and up. During the summertime, the trails are used for running, mountain biking, and hiking.
