Canada’s 2 Billion Trees Commitment aims to provide financial support to organizations in order to plant trees over a 10 year span. Parks Canada is working to plant trees across 26 sites through the program to help renew ecosystems. In Atlantic regions, the organization is collecting seeds on-site to help trees at risk and build a stronger forest in the future.
The 2 Billion Trees Commitment runs from 2021 to 2031, providing up to $3.2 billionย from the federal government to fund different programs. Funding goes to a variety of organizations and governments representing provinces, territories, Indigenous groups, municipalities, non-profits, and private organizations. Funding can coverย up to 50% of eligible project costsย for general applicants andย up to 100%ย for Indigenous-led projects.
As of mid-2025, Canada has planted around 228 million trees, or just around 10% of the total goal. There are agreements in place to get almost a billion more trees planted in the coming years, with 11 provinces and territories, 40 Indigenous groups, 32 municipalities, and 86 non-profit organizations, committing to the planting ofย 716 million trees as of 2024.
Planting 2 billion trees is seen as a significant step toward tackling both climate change and biodiversity loss. The planted trees well capture and store carbon from the atmosphere, improve air and water quality, help restore nature and biodiversity, cool urban centers, and create thousands of new green jobs.
