The White River National Forest is seeking public comments on Vail Mountain Resort’s proposal to replace several older chair lifts and make additional upgrades for skier circulation and operational access. The proposed changes are within the existing permit boundary for Vail Mountain Resort and were included in the 2024 Master Development Plan.

Colorado’s White River National Forest

“The White River National Forest provides world-class winter recreation opportunities, including 11 permitted ski resorts. As we review this proposal for Vail Mountain, we want to hear any comments or concerns from the public.” – Eagle-Holy Cross District Ranger Leanne Veldhuis

The resort hopes to replace Chair 21 (Orient Express) quad with a six-person chairlift with a capacity of 3,600 people per hour. The replacement aims to improve reliable access to the Back Bowls while improving wait times and circulation. Additionally the resort aims to improve the Eagle’s Nest Beginner’s Experience with a replaced Chair 15 to increase the current 1,400 people per hour capacity to 2,400 and improve snowmaking infrastructure.

Vail proposes to grade approximately six acres of terrain along the Two Elk ridgeline between the top terminal of Chair 21 and the Two Elk Lodge to improve skier flow and circulation. The grading would eliminate flat and inconsistent pitches in this area as well as allow Lift 24 to be removed.” – White River National Forest

Full details on the proposal as well as information on how to comment is available here. Comments submitted by June 6, 2025, will be the most helpful.
