Professional New Zealand skier Nico Porteous stopped by the Atomic factory in Altenmarkt im Pongau, Austria, to build a pair of Bent Chetler 120s. He starts with a mold of the ski, layering from the base to top sheet with fiberglass, edges, wood, and everything else before putting the ski into the press.
It’s a fascinating look at the process and gives good detail on the amount of delicate work that goes into making a single pair of skis. Once the skis come out of the press, they’re ground down, waxed up, sharpened, and sent on their way. It’s an impressive amount of work.
The Bent Chetler 120 goes for $1,025 on the Atomic website but can typically be purchased in a ski shop near you.
