Death Valley National Park has reopened Emigrant Canyon Road, a high-elevation route that provides access to cooler recreation during the hot summers, after the completion major repairs targeting damage caused by Hurricane Hillary back in August of 2023.

The road suffered heavy damage after severe flash flooding created by the hurricane. The road was able to reopen after a few months with the help of temporary fixes, but it was left vulnerable to wear and tear.

The National Park Service worked with the Federal Highway Administration to make long-term road repairs to the area, reinforcing some segments against future flooding with buried concrete barriers and rock-filled baskets.

Emigrant Canyon Road leads to Wildrose Campground. Located at 4,000 feet, the higher elevation campground offers a welcome respite from the heat; it is typically around 15 degrees cooler than Furnace Creek.” – National Park Service

As a reminder, visitors should always bring their own water when visiting any location ins Death Valley National Park. No vehicles over 25 feet in length are allowed on Emigrant Canyon Road.
