San Miguel County Search and Rescue responded to a reported of two lost snowmobilers who found themselves stuck in the Beaver Park area around 15 miles south of Norwood, Colorado.
According to the San Miguel County Sheriff, the two local men were able to dig out one snowmobile while the search and rescue team were actively responding. They took the one sled down to a road where they met up with the rescuers.
The duo did not have food, water, or extra clothing. While in this case they were able to call for help and remove one of the sleds, they were ill-prepared if the situation had turned out differently. In response, Sheriff Bill Masters is reminding those who recreate in the backcountry to be be prepared.
“We may sound like a broken record, but it is critical that people who recreate in the backcountry be prepared should they find themselves lost, injured or in need of rescue.” – Sheriff Bill Masters
Five Sheriff’s deputies, around a dozen search and rescue members, a Helitrax helicopter and pilot, and several snowmobiles were used during the three hour mission.
