Two snowmobilers required rescue after seriously injuring themselves during a tree strike in Gallatin County, Montana, on March 19.
According to the Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue (GCSSAR), GCSSAR, Big Sky Team, and the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after a call came in to the county’s 911 Dispatch. GCSSAR Big Sky volunteers were deployed with hasty teams, a Snowbulance, and an Orion rescue sled.
Upon arrival at the scene, one of the patients was found to be in a deteriorating medical condition and a LifeFlight medical helicopter was called. The helicopter landed on the groomed snowmobile trail before flying the patient to Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center.
The second patient, found to be in better condition, was transported by ground to the trail head before being transferred into the care of Big Sky Fire Department and transported to Bozeman Health Big Sky Medical Center.
“The Big Sky Section of Search and Rescue received tremendous assistance from a group of volunteer firefighters and other bystanders who were recreating in the area. Sheriff Dan Springer would like to thank all the bystanders who had taken time to receive medical training and who jumped into action to help other backcountry users in their time of need.” – GCSSAR
GCSSAR notes that both snowmobilers were wearing all necessary safety equipment including full face helmets and goggles. Without that gear, this accident could have had much worse consequences.
