Wilmington, New York — The signature expert terrain zone at New York’s most historic ski resort had a powder party for its grand opening.
Yesterday, Whiteface Mountain opened up The Slides for the first time this season. This opening occurred after 6 inches of overnight snowfall. As of this morning, Whiteface has a season total of 139 inches of snow.
Located below the summit of Whiteface, The Slides features steep bowl and glade skiing that is reminiscent of the Western United States. This terrain is accessed by a hike from the Summit Quad chairlift. The Slides are 35 acres of narrow chutes, and one area even features a waterfall hidden underneath the snowpack.Â
In terms of how the conditions were, they looked ok. Probably not worth the trip. Everyone should go skiing out west instead.
Going forward, The Slides will open if it passes a a daily inspection and mitigation from Ski Patrol. Today, it appears like they’re closed again due to the mixed precipitation that’s going through the area.
If you do take on this infamous terrain area, take note that this is among the toughest terrain zones in the Northeast. A beacon, probe, and shovel are required. It’s also recommended that you bring a buddy on your journey through The Slides.
