Snowbird has issued a statement following an inbounds avalanche that struck the Defiance Ledge trail area yesterday at 2:10 p.m. Ski patrol responded to the avalanche site immediately. Thankfully no one was caught in the slide.

“Today, we received 10” of graupel snow following days of strong winds, with gusts reaching 83 MPH.

At approximately 2:10 pm, a natural avalanche occurred in the Defiance Ledge area. Snowbird Ski Patrol arrived within minutes and searched the area. Ski Patrol also deployed Snowbird’s Avalanche Rescue Dog team. The search yielded no sign of anyone caught in the slide and no individuals have been reported missing at this time. Due to increasingly challenging conditions, at 2:45pm all lifts except Chickadee were closed.

Please anticipate a delayed opening tomorrow due to avalanche mitigation. We’re grateful to our teams for all their hard work and thank you in advance for your patience.”

Snowbird received an additional 8 inches of snow overnight and anticipates delays due to avalanche mitigation operations:

“Anticipate a delayed opening this morning. Again: 19” in 24 hours, 8” overnight. 11 of those inches are fascinating Dippin’ Dot-esque snow sitting atop a nice, icy base. Tilt that situation 30+ degrees and add another 8 inches of (albeit fluffier) snow––you don’t need to be an avalanche forecaster to understand that those conditions warrant some sweet, sweet mitigation.”

Snowbird Mountain Report:

February 8, 2025 – 05:47 am

Wake Up! It’s Maeve with your daily snow report.

Powder day! Powder. Day. At. Snowbird. A cheeky 11” yesterday and a tasteful 8” overnight. You do the math, and I’ll do it too: that’s 19” in 24 hours! My little East Coast heart can hardly stand the strain. Anticipate cooler temperatures this Saturday (high temp of 30°, wind chill values as low as 5°), Western 15-35 mph winds and increased cloud cover throughout the day. There’s a slim chance of more snow today; forecasts suggest very little accumulation.
