Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah — After a snowy and windy day at Snowbird, a tragedy nearly struck the Utah ski resort.

At 2:10 p.m. today, an inbounds natural avalanche was reported in the area around the Defiance Ledge trail. Snowbird ski patrol and the avalanche dogs were quickly able to figure out that no one was caught in the slide.

If you’re wondering where Defiance Ledge is, it’s situated on the far right of the ski resort’s inbounds boundary.

In response, Snowbird closed nearly every chairlift that was operating at around 2:45 p.m., excluding Chickadee. That chairlift services a limited amount of beginner terrain next to the Cliff Lodge and Snowbird Center.

It’ll be interesting to see if these snow conditions will impact lift operations this weekend in Little Cottonwood Canyon.
