Park City, Utah — While it’s easier to reach the ski resorts in Park City compared to the Cottonwoods, that’s not to say that there aren’t challenges in getting there. Traffic is common on powder days, and unlike in the Cottonwoods, slow-moving semi-trailers can make it a tricky drive.
Last month, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) launched new social media pages that give updates on traffic in Parleys Canyon (aka I-80) and the roads in and around Park City. Called Wasatch Back, these social media pages will give drivers a heads-up on what the road conditions are. So far, UDOT has set up accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. A website has also been set up for updates for Park City.
“Parleys Canyon and Park City are critical corridors for Utah’s winter recreation, and ensuring drivers have access to timely, accurate information is a top priority,” said Becky Parker, the Traveler Information Director at UDOT. “With UDOT Wasatch Back, we’re expanding our reach to make winter travel safer and more efficient for everyone.”
The move follows the success of the UDOT Cottonwood Canyons social media accounts, which have helped raised awareness of traffic conditions and avalanche closures in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. For Utah skiers, these social media accounts have become one of the critical sources of information for days out on the slopes.
A majority of the early Wasatch Back posts that they’ve done are weekly recaps of what popular events and big weather events are coming to the area.
Over time, UDOT plans to provide updates in the Wasatch Back regarding crashes on the road, traction laws, and the parking openings at the ski resorts.
Overall, these accounts are a good follow for those who frequent the roads around Park City and those planning a vacation to the popular Utah tourist destination.
