Anchorage, Alaska — After a late end to the ski season during the last go around, things haven’t been going as smoothly for Arctic Valley this time around.

While Arctic Valley received snow in October, a lack of snow in November and December led to a moving of its projected opening date. Arctic Valley does have snowmaking, but it also needs sufficient snowfall to get the mountain operational. December also saw minimal snowfall, but they were able to get the snow tubing hill open.

January has seen a few snowstorms, which has helped build up the base. However, it also has provided some heavy winds.

Last week, heavy winds were an issue for ski areas around the area, including Hilltop and Alyeska. However, the heavy winds cause significant damage at Arctic Valley. This past weekend, wind speeds of over 100 mph swept through the ski area.

Various pieces of Artic Valley’s infrastructure were damaged by the heavy winds. This included Chair 2’s lift shack, the groomer maintenance tent, and the t-bar. The T-bar faced a derailment on Towers 1 and 4, but this was repaired quickly. Yesterday, it was announced that the lift shack has been repaired.

Arctic Valley hopes to open next week, as another round of snow is projected this weekend. However, they’ll need to get their lifts and infrastructure functional again following the windstorm. In the meantime, its snow tubing hill is open.
