A chlorine gas leak at Roaring Springs has led to the closure of all inner canyon corridor trails at Grand Canyon National Park. The closures include Bright Angel Trail, South Kaibab Trail, and North Kaibab Trail.

The closures were officially posted at 6pm on January 15, 2025. They apply to both overnight and day hikers. Closed trails and areas should be fully avoided for the safety of hikers and visitors to the national park.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, chlorine gas exposure can cause burning in the eyes, nose, and throat, in addition to a cough, constriction, and edema of the airway and lungs.

In a case of direct contact with liquid chlorine or concentrated vapor, severe chemical burns that lead to cell death and ulceration are possible.

No indication on when the trails might reopen has been released at this point.
