The Hahnenkamm FIS Alpine World Cup race weekend in Kitzbühel, Austria, is one of the best Alpine World Cup events of the year. Three events take place through the weekend, slalom, super G, and a downhill race, and while the athletes tend to be incredible to watch, it’s the Streif ski run that usually earns all of the attention.
The Streif is often considered one of the most difficult downhill runs in the world, taking racers down a run just over 2 miles long (3,312 meters) that drops a total of 2821.5 feet (860 meters). It’s average gradient is 27%, but it reaches a vicious 86% at its steepest. Athletes hit multiple jumps and endure centrifugal forces of 3.1 g. It is truly incredible to watch, and Helly Hansen took a deep dive into what makes it so incredible.
