Good friends on a fall backpacking trip

Skiing is my primary focus, but due to the nature of the sport, it’s pretty difficult to do all year-round. I have the same crisis every time the ski season begins to wind down. This year has been particularly difficult as the season has been shorter and already a little underwhelming.

Aside from trying to make the season last as long as possible, I’m in search of new ways to spend my time over the next few months. I’ve always been a bit of a runner, though I think there’s got to be more enticing activities out there.

I’ve been hearing the rumbling surrounding mountain biking recently, and I think I might be ready to invest. It seems like a natural complement to skiing, but it’s just one of those things I’ve never gotten into (being another extremely expensive hobby). It sounds fun and simultaneously terrifying, though many could say the same about skiing.

I grew up rock climbing, a hobby I’m still fond of, but with an unfortunately broken thumb, it’s not really on the docket for me this spring. I’m on the hunt for something as wonderful as skiing. Skiing goes far beyond the activity for me; I’m in search of the same community, culture, and access to the outdoors that I get from skiing.

I think the solution to my problem lies with purchasing a bike, though I plan to make this the season I really commit to dry-land ski training. I’ve never been one for exercise that’s not outdoors, but I do understand it has quite positive effects.

The classic summer activities for me include hiking and backpacking as well. Fishing seems to be a usual activity on these trips too; perhaps I should also give that a try this summer.

Fishing/Backpacking

This should be a summer of new beginnings, new hobbies, and hopefully travel. Though I’m sure I’ll spend the most time thinking about skiing and plotting summer couloirs. Whether skiing or hiking, good people are always a part of the equation.
