Nova Scotia — Cape Smokey has been teasing something big. Last week, Cape Smokey showed a cut line up a nearby mountain, teasing something going on. Their grand plan was revealed yesterday, and it will certainly be of interest to skiers and riders.
Yesterday, Cape Smokey confirmed that it has begun work on a multi-year terrain expansion. Work is underway on cutting the new lift lines and trails. Over a 4.5-year timespan, the goal is to add three new lifts, along with various trails. Most of the terrain will cater to advanced and expert skiers. When complete, Cape Smokey will feature over 600 acres of skiable terrain and a vertical drop of 400 meters (a little over 1,300 feet).
The goal is to open some of the terrain this year. However, it’ll rely on natural snowfall, and it’ll only be advised for backcountry skiers.
The move is the latest sign that the ski resort has pulled off an impressive comeback. For much of the 2010s, the ski resort had limited operations and was run by hardy volunteers. However, investors came in 2019 and have slowly rebuilt the place. This has included replacing the old chairlift with a gondola, regrowing the trail network, and adding overnight accommodations.
