Wolf pack hunts two moose.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Donna Gail Shaw captured incredible footage of a pack of five wolves chasing and attacking a mother moose and moose yearling in Campbell Creek in Anchorage, Alaska. The footage, captured on a game camera, did eventually show the wolves taking down the yearling, but Shaw chose not to share that portion of the clip.

The footage she did capture was shared to the Muldoon Area Trail Photos and Videos Facebook group, in which Shaw’s clips appear frequently. She’s captured and shared videos of wolves, moose, bears, and much more.

According to KTVA, Shaw noticed moose hair on the creek bank while removing the memory cards from her cameras. At first she thought a bear had taken down one of the massive animals and had buried it somewhere back in the woods. She was not prepared to see what she captured.

Moose are a natural prey of wolves, so this behavior isn’t incredibly surprising or concerning. However, capturing the act on camera, especially on a game camera, is a very rare and special situation.

Wolves primarily hunt ungulates, or hoofed mammals, but they’ll prey on smaller mammals like beavers, hares, and marmots, and occasionally go after birds and fish. Their flexible diet is given credit for their ability to survive in a host of environments across much of the Northern Hemisphere.
