PDX — Alaska Airlines is growing its ski footprint next thanks to adding flights to a Colorado ski destination that’s known for a certain type of powder.
Yesterday, Alaska Airlines announced that it will launch winter service from Portland International Airport (PDX) to Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN). It will be offered from February 11th to March 28th. This airport gives relatively convenient access to Howelsen Hill (America’s first ski area) and Steamboat Resort.
The Embraer 175 will fly to and from Yampa Valley. The twice-weekly flight from Portland to Yampa Valley will depart from Oregon at 10:40 a.m. and arrive at 2:05 p.m. From Yampa Valley to Portland will also be a twice-weekly flight. These flights will depart at 2:45 p.m. and arrive at 4:35 p.m. Like other airlines, a checked bag counts as both a ski and boot bag.
Recent Alaska Flights With Ski Access
Alaska Airlines is known for its hospitality to skiers. Some of their flights include the ability to add a lift ticket to an adjacent mountain for free. While this is the most noteworthy recent addition for skiers, there are some recent or planned additions which will also appeal to them.
Recent flight additions include Santa Ana to/from Spokane (various mountains like Schweitzer and 49 Degrees North), Santa Rosa to/from Boise (home to Bogus Basin), Tulsa to/from Seattle (home of Crystal Mountain, Stevens Pass, and Summit at Snoqualmie), Baltimore to/from Portland (Mt. Hood), Philadelphia to/from Portland, St. Louis to/from Portland, Seattle to/from Rome (Italy ski trip).
They also added summer service to mountainous destinations, such as Boston to/from Anchorage, and Portland to/from Jackson Hole.
For future additions, there’s Portland to/from Wenatchee (home to Mission Ridge), Santa Rosa to/from Salt Lake City (you can probably name the mountains), Long Beach to/from Seattle, Santa Rosa to/from Boise, Honolulu to/from Boise, and Honolulu to/from Spokane.
