New Zealand’s strangest ski lift is back in business after five years of sitting still. Broken River Ski Area’s Tyndall Tramway is the shortest and steepest railway in New Zealand, taking skiers from the parking lot to the ski field’s ticketing office in just four minutes.
According to the New Zealand Herald, the Tyndall Tramway suffered mechanical issues in 2018, and with delays caused by the pandemic, it had sat broken since then. With no other way from the parking lot to the ski field, visitors were forced to take a 20-30 minute walk in their ski gear.
Club members have reported that the area has been operating at a loss for several years, with repair costs on the tram at over $140,000. Fortunately, on July 25, Broken River’s opening day, the tramway began running once again.
“Looking forward to using our Tyndall Tram this winter. Such a scenic 4 minute ride up to the ticket office. Saves the legs for the skiing too!!” – Broken River
