Arguably the world’s best hiking destination is closed until further notice. USA Today reports that the Culture Ministry has closed the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu in order “to protect the safety of tourists and the population in general.” 417 visitors were stuck at Machu Pichu, 300 of which were foreigners. Some walked to Piscacucho, but the hours-long hike is nearly impossible for most who traveled there. Other tourists were evacuated. Those who bought tickets to go there from last Saturday until one month after whenever the protests conclude will be refunded.

The reason for the closure is that the political situation in Peru is perilous. In 2022, former President Castillo was impeached by the legislature due to corruption allegations. Castillo attempted to dissolve the government, but was thwarted by their congress, and was then imprisoned for rebellion. Castillo was popular among the general public, as the once teacher aimed to take on income inequality.

The current President, Dina Boluarte, has faced two months of violent protests and has tried to diffuse tensions to no avail. Protesters want to see Castillo freed, and for elections to happen in the near future. At least fifty-five people have died from the riots, with many also being detained by authorities.

Machu Picchu is one of the seven wonders of the world. The 15th-century citadel is located 7970 feet above sea level in the Andes. Machu Picchu was likely occupied for over a century, but it was abandoned by the Incas around the time of the Spanish conquest. After being rediscovered during the late 19th/early 20th century, restoration work has helped make Machu Picchu a bucket list destination for many.
