“Providing lift access and more skiing and riding closer to downtown Lincoln is exciting—and unique—particularly in the East. Adding lift service just a mile and a half from Interstate 93, in the center of Lincoln, improves the guest experience immensely and is something we’ve been focused on for many years.”Brian Norton, President and General Manager of Loon Mountain Resort

Loon Mountain Resort’s South Peak expansion first opened back during the 2007-08 season, allowing one of the most popular ski resorts on the East Coast to spread out its guests at a third base area. For years, expansion around the Escape Route trail has been rumored, as the run leads to a large parking lot with no lift service. Yesterday, Loon Mountain announced its plans to expand the mountains’ offerings over at South Peak, which will open during the 2023-24 season.

Loon Mountain will be sculpting thirty acres of new beginner and intermediate terrain around the Cruiser and Escape Route trails over at South Peak. The Escape Route parking lot will be serviced by a Doppelmayr Alpenstar fixed-grip quad chairlift with a loading carpet and will travel five hundred vertical feet.

Some of the features of the terrain pod will include multiple gladded runs and a fully automated snowmaking system. Ticketing and other general services will be available at the new Escape Route base area. Other surface lifts for beginners, and further facilities and services for beginners, are also planned in the following years. The Undercut glade will also undergo some clearing to allow for additional downhill capacity.

In terms of beginner skiing options, this expansion for Loon is pretty critical. Right now, Loon is limited to a beginner trail serviced by the Sarsaparilla Carpet, and two trails that are serviced by Kissin’ Cousin Double Chairlift. While the Little Sister chairlift technically services a beginner trail, this run is used as a terrain park and as an area for snow tubing. The expansion will help grow Loon’s beginner terrain by 50% and make it more convenient for families to get to the mountain from I-93.
