Eden, Utah — It’s been a tough past few years at Nordic Valley Ski Resort.
A downed chairlift in 2023 and 2024, the base lodge being destroyed by a fire, reduced night skiing operations, and then a lack of snow last winter have led to a diminished guest experience. This is despite a massive terrain expansion that opened in the early 2020s, which brought a rise in visitation to the ski resort.
This past winter also saw struggles for Nordic Valley. While they have snowmaking, it had to close multiple times and ended its season in late February.
More confusion has arisen from the removal of the Crockett chairlift. While it served a minuscule amount of Nordic Valley’s skiable terrain, it now means that skiers and riders can no longer ski The Garden trail. It also means snow tubing will no longer be offered by Nordic Valley. To clarify these changes, the ski resort’s general manager penned a letter to guests.
The Letter
Last week, Nordic Valley’s General Manager Cobalt Stromberg penned a letter to guests regarding the offseason so far. The main topic discussed was the removal of the Crockett chairlift, with the argument being that this move is essential to the ski resort’s future development. The good news for locals is that they will be selling the old chairs. The rest of the letter is pretty vague. The main point being made is that while the ski resort is growing, it won’t lose its community feel.
Some were confused by the letter, with people stating that they wanted more explanation about Nordic’s future plans.
Missing Context
Here’s what was missing from the letter. For years, a developer (Skyline Mountain Base, LLC) that owns the Nordic Valley’s land has been preparing to build a base village. This plan was approved by Weber County, with preliminary work reportedly underway. With this development would come new lifts, including a proper replacement for the base lodge. However, this is a timely process.
Mountain Capital Partners (which operates the ski resort) has been investing in their properties, and I still believe that they have good plans for Nordic Valley. However, due to the improvements needed, I think it will be some time before Nordic Valley regains its stride.
