Mineral King Ski Resort never got off the ground but the story behind Walt Disney’s final project is fascinating. Walt’s vision for an “American Alpine Wonderland” included a 1,030 room hotel, ice rink, golf course and 22 chairlifts spanning eight glacial cirques.

The project met major hurdles to get permission to build in the national park and torrents of pushback from conservationists of the day. Ultimately interest in pursuing it fizzled out after about a decade and it was shelved but the story of the unrealized resort has become legend:
