As lakes begin to freeze over, now is as good a time as any to talk ice safety. If you’re planning on ice fishing, snowmobiling, or just doing donuts out there on the ice– make sure the ice is thick enough to support whatever you’re doing.

Here’s a simple guide courtesy of the Department of Natural Resources. It’s delightfully nerdy with an AT-AT and Godzilla as weighty examples.

State of Minnesota guide to ice thickness/safety:

  • 4″ – Ice fishing or other activities on foot
  • 5″ – 7″ – Snowmobile or ATV
  • 8″ – 12″ – Car or small pickup
  • 12″ – 15″ – Medium truck
