Meteorological spring has sprung and with it are coming unseasonably cold temps and snow– that’s something we can all get behind.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is calling for below-average temps to stretch from Southern California to South Carolina with everything north of those two locales seeing frigid conditions.

“The 3/22-28 Week-2 forecast favors below-normal temperatures across the northern two-thirds of the lower-48 states, with above-normal temperatures favored from the Southwest through Gulf states. Odds continue to favor above-normal precipitation in most areas during the same period.” – NOAA Climate Prediction Center

With the exception of the Texas panhandle, the rest of the United States should also see excess precipitation through the next 14 days. For Colorado and Utah, this is great news as many fear a horrible fire season upcoming this summer.

8-14 Day NOAA Discussion

DURING THE WEEK-2 PERIOD, THE LARGE-SCALE PATTERN OVER THE FORECAST DOMAIN IS EXPECTED TO BE SIMILAR TO THAT FORECAST IN THE 6-10 DAY PERIOD, EXCEPT LESS AMPLIFIED.

PROBABILITIES OF NEAR TO BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES ARE FORECAST FOR MUCH OF MAINLAND ALASKA AND THE PANHANDLE, ASSOCIATED WITH EXPECTED RELATIVELY COLD NORTHEASTERLY LOW-LEVEL FLOW FROM CANADA. ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES ARE FAVORED FOR NORTHERN AND WESTERN TIER OF MAINLAND ALASKA AND THE ALEUTIANS, CONSISTENT WITH FORECAST TOOLS. PREDICTED BELOW NORMAL HEIGHTS THROUGHOUT THE NORTHERN [USA] FAVOR BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR THE WESTERN AND NORTH-CENTRAL [USA]. FORECAST TROUGHS ALSO ENHANCE CHANCES OF BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN MUCH OF THE NORTHEASTERN [USA]. A PREDICTED RIDGE OVER PARTS OF THE SOUTH INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR PARTS OF THE SOUTHWEST AND SOUTHERN PLAINS, PARTS OF THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AND THE SOUTHEAST U.S.

THE STORM SYSTEMS ARE EXPECTED TO TRAVEL ACROSS THE WESTERN AND NORTHERN USA, FAVORING ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION OVER MUCH OF THE [COUNTRY]. NEAR TO BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION IS FAVORED FOR VICINITY OF NEW MEXICO AND PARTS OF THE SOUTHEAST U.S., CONSISTENT WITH CONSOLIDATION TOOLS.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE FOR THE 8-14 DAY PERIOD: AVERAGE, 3 OUT OF 5, DUE TO GOOD MODEL AND TOOL AGREEMENT.
