The World Heli Challenge happened August 3rd through August 5th in Mt. Aspiring National Park near Wanaka, New Zealand. The New Zealand weather proved to be a factor, with one of the biggest storm systems of the decade coming through days before the competition with an extremely high freezing level. For this reason, there was a 2-3 inch ice crust on top of the snow pack, making skiing and snowboarding a bit more difficult. Conditions were far less than ideal for a competition. In addition, avalanches were triggered both fly days of the competition; one before riders rode down to the venue on the freestyle day, and during Ted Davenport’s winning run in the extreme day. Travis Rice won on the male snowboard side of things, Ted Davenport in the male skiing category, Ane Enderud for the female skiing category, and Aline Bock for the female boarders. All things considered, a good time was had by all.
