Five times stronger than steel and almost three times as tough as Kevlar, the protein fiber is heat, cold, and water resistant. Those qualities have reportedly caught the eye higher-ups at Patagonia, who recently signed a partnership with the San Fransisco based Bolt Threads earlier in May reports TechCrunch.com. Patagonia hopes that at some point, the sustainable and stronger than steel material will serve as a centerpiece fabric for much of their outerwear.

In addition to the partnership, BOLT Threads has raised nearly $50 million in Series C venture funding to further their cause. That cause could be a game-changer for the trillion dollar textile industry and as of now, a market ready product is expected for 2018.
